It appears that most things we use, buy or sign up for must be activated. Most apps require you to sign in before you can buy or even use them. When you get a new credit or debit card, you must call or sign in before you can use the card. You must activate it.
The same is true for our New Year’s goals or resolutions. I like to call them goals, as a goal is, by definition: something that you are trying to do or achieve; the end toward which effort is directed. What are you goals for 2014? When you are determining your goals, be creative, realistic and write them down. Make the goals something you are ready to work toward achieving. If your goal is unrealistic, you will become frustrated and lose interest.
Next, set up a step-by-step plan to accomplish your goals. Then it’s time to activate the plan. To activate, you must move forward, take action and begin working toward accomplishing your goals. You have to participate in this process. To participate, you have to be motivated, present and active.
How do you stay motivated to continue working toward your goals? You must motivate, activate and participate! Follow your plan, yet be flexible, as what motivates you right now may not in a few months. Be creative, figure out what works for you and what does not. Anytime you start to feel down or like you’re losing interest, remember why the goal is important to you.
It’s easy for motivation to fade, but you must continue to motivate yourself! If your goal is to lose weight, put a picture of yourself that you like on the refrigerator or somewhere you will see it several times a day. Or, hang your favorite jeans somewhere you can see them daily. It will help keep you focused and motivated. If your goal is to pay off debts, keep a bill in your purse or wallet, or a sticky note on your credit card with the balance due. Then, when you pull out the credit card or your wallet, you’ll have a visual reminder of what you are trying to accomplish. It may change your mind on making a purchase. Ask yourself: how will this purchase affect my goal?
We all have times when we backslide, and if you do, do not beat yourself up and give up. Do what it takes to get back on track. Continue to activate your plan, and keep moving forward. Be active and participate in obtaining your goals.
This is also true for living your life….motivate, activate and participate! It’s your life. Live it.
Make this YOUR year!
